I’ve been podcasting for two years, exploring nearly 100 subjects in movies, television, and music.
Returning to these works, I’m asking what they teach us about living today. My reflections on the Academy Awards, the sixties television classroom of “Room 222”, and the music of Sam Cooke bring me back to the courage required to keep growing.
In the Oscars podcast, I admire artistic recognition while wondering whether winning can make an artist more cautious, reluctant to risk a reputation on unfamiliar material. In “Room 222”, I find teachers willing to let students question accepted ideas and willing to endure the discomfort those questions create. Sam Cooke’s songs move through affection, loneliness, celebration, and the hope for change, giving a remarkable voice to feelings that success cannot resolve for us. Across these different subjects, I see people reaching beyond what they already know how to do, think, or express.
That willingness matters today, when admitting uncertainty can feel like surrendering authority. We can become protective of a professional reputation, a settled opinion, or the version of ourselves that others have learned to applaud. Yet the artist needs another story worth attempting; the teacher needs students who can think independently; and the listener needs words for emotions that confidence alone cannot contain.
What moves me about “Room 222” is that its adults can guide young people without pretending every answer is settled. What I treasure in Sam Cooke is the breadth of human experience his voice makes room for, and in my Oscars podcast, I discuss filmmakers willingness to take another creative chance.
Together, these podcasts suggest a lesson for any age: achievement gives us something to build upon, but we still have to risk the next question, the difficult conversation, and the work whose outcome we cannot guarantee.
